Não há melhor para aproveitar os resíduos alimentares!

Eu tenho muita pena de não poder fazer, mas vivo num apartamento e não tenho varanda. E tenho dois gatos curiosos…

Para quem tem espaço, é uma excelente forma de reduzir os resíduos familiares e de jardim, ao mesmo tempo que se produz o próprio fertilizante. Ou seja, poupa-se duas vezes:

- Menos sacos para por o lixo;

- Não se tem que comprar fertilizante.

Para além do que sabemos exatamente a proveniência do nosso composto e contribuímos um bocadinho menos para a sobrelotação dos aterros.

Alguns exemplos do que se pode colocar a compostar:

- Restos de fruta e vegetais;

- Cascas de ovos;

- Cartão (os tubos do papel higiénico cão especialmente úteis para ajudar na oxigenação, visto que criam bolsas de ar);

- Folhas, relva, etc.;

- Borras de café.

Há já no mercado vários compositores à venda que facilitam o processo, mas também é possível construir um, utilizando, por exemplo, paletes de madeira. Podem ver um exemplo aqui.

There is no better way to utilize food waste!

I wish I was able to have one, but I live in an apartment and have no balcony. And I have two curious cats.

For those who have space, it is an excellent way to reduce family and garden waste and at the same time producing your own bio fertilizer. That said, if you can save twice:

- Less bags for garbage;

- You don’t have to buy fertilizer.

Apart from that, you know exactly the origin of your fertilizer and contribute a bit less to the overcrowding of landfills.

Some examples of what you can compost:

- Fruit and vegetable scraps;

- Shell eggs;

- Cardboard (toilet paper tubes are especially useful to help oxygenation, since they create air pockets);

- Leaves, grass, etc.;

- Coffee grounds.

There are already on the market for sale various composers that facilitate the process, but it’s also possible to build one, using, for example, wooden pallets. You can see an example here.

Dica de poupança # 26 - Usar guardanapos e lenços de pano | Saving tip # 26 – Use cloth napkins and handkerchiefs

Um guardanapo por refeição a juntar aos enes pacotes de lenços gastos nesta época do ano, soma-se uma quantidade elevada de papel gasto (e também de plástico, nas embalagens!).

E claro, de dinheiro na compra deste items.

Porque não usar reutilizáveis de pano? Como mostrei aqui, é o que eu faço e as vantagens são várias:

- Menos agressivo para a pele;

- Mais ecológicos, evitando-se o consumo de papel sem necessidade, e todo o 

processo de fabrico e transporte.

- Mais económicos, visto que se vão sempre reutilizando. Para além disso, podem facilmente ser feitos com restos de tecidos que haja em casa, ou procurando bem no enxoval (de certeza que há uma toalha algures que veio com guardanapos de pano que nunca saíram da gaveta ;));

- Mais giros! Ao fazê-los em casa podem personalizar ao vosso gosto, bordar os nomes, etc.

A napkin for every meal, adding to all the packages of tissue paper spent this time of year, sum up to a high amount of wasted paper (and plastic in the packaging!).

And of course, wasted money in buying this items.

Why not use reusable? As shown here, it is what I do and the advantages are many:

- Less aggressive to the skin;

- More environmentally friendly, avoiding paper consumption unnecessarily, and the whole process of manufacturing and transportation.

- More economic, since you’ll be reusing over and over again. In addition, it can easily be made with fabric remains at home, or searching the cabinets (for sure there is somewhere a dinner towel that came with cloth napkins that never left the drawer ;) );

- Cuter! By making them at home, you can customize them to your taste, embroider names, etc.

Dica de poupança # 23 - Reutilizar sacos de plástico transparentes | Saving tip # 23 – Reuse clear plastic bags

Sabem aqueles sacos de plástico transparentes em que se colocam as frutas e legumes quando vão às compras? Depois que destino lhes dão?

Eu sei que não têm alças e por isso não servem para transportar outras coisas, mas ainda têm utilidade.

Sejam cuidadosos a abri-los e guardem-nos. Podem depois utilizá-los para congelar alimentos, como legumes já cortados para a sopa, ou pão fatiado, por exemplo. Também os podem utilizar para colocar sandes ou fruta para levar para o trabalho.

Quando se rasgarem, aí sim, reciclagem com eles!

Do you know those clear plastic bags in which you put the fruits and vegetables when grocery shopping? What destiny do you give them afterwards?

I know they don’t have handles and so can’t be used to carry other things, but they still have some utility.

Be careful to open them and then store them. They can be used to freeze food such as vegetables for soup already cut or sliced bread, for example. They also can be used to carry fruit or sandwiches to take to work.

When they start to tread, then yes, recycle them!

Well, my suggestion is to make one or two vegetarian meals a week (or more, of course!). How about joining MeatlessMondays? 

You can make excellent economic vegetarian meals and therefore protect a bit the environment, but also save a buck!

Toalhitas reutilizáveis | Reusable baby wipes

Para além das fraldinhas, cá por casa também vamos usar toalhitas reutilizáveis.

Por várias razões:

- São obviamente mais ecológicas;

- São mais económicas;

- São práticas quer para limpar chichis e cocós, quer para limpar a carinha do bebé (o que não se deve fazer com as toalhitas descartáveis!);

- Não representam propriamente trabalho adicional (quem já vai lavar fraldas, lava também as toalhitas…);

- São adequadas à pele sensível do bebé (não têm nenhum produto químico, nem tão pouco álcool).

São vários os locais onde as podem adquirir e há de diversos materiais (microfibra, algodão, turco, bambu, flanela…).

In addition to the cloth diapers, here at home we’re also going to use reusable wipes.

For several reasons:

- They are obviously more ecological;

- They are more economic;

- They’re practical either to clean baby bums or to wipe his face (something you shouldn’t do with disposable wipes!);

- They don’t really represent additional work (if you’re already going to wash diapers, you’ll wash baby wipes...);

- They are suitable for the sensitive baby skin (they don’t have any chemicals, nor alcohol).

There are several places where they can get them and they come in different materials (microfiber, cotton, terrycloth, bamboo, flannel...).

Eu optei por fazer as minhas a partir de uns lençóis de flanela antigos, o que as torna ainda mais ecológicas e económicas.

Fiz dois tamanhos diferentes.

I chose to do mine from some old flannel sheets, making them even more ecological and economical.

I made two different sizes.

Umas de 14 cm de lado, que cabem à medida nesta caixa de plástico e portanto tornam-se práticas para transportar.

A 14 cm wide, which fit perfectly in this plastic box and thus become practical to transport.

E umas maiores, com 20 cm.

And a larger, 20 cm wide.

Optei por fazê-las com apenas uma camada, porque me parece suficiente. Para que não desfiassem, utilizei ponto ziguezague à volta.

Por enquanto, acho que fiz cerca de 50 toalhitas.

Quando as tiver em uso, darei feedback se serão necessárias mais e se fará sentido fazê-las com duas camadas ou não.

I chose to do them with only one layer, it seems to me enough. To avoid shredding, I zigzag it all around.

For now, I think I did about 50 wipes.

After using them for a while, I’ll give feedback regarding if there’s need for more wipes and if it makes sense to do them with two layers or not.

Utilizei ainda os mesmos lençóis para fazer dois conjuntos de lençóis mais pequenos, para o berço.

I also used the same sheets to make two sets of smaller sheets for the crib.

Mamãs ecológicas, que tal se têm dado com toalhitas reutilizáveis? Quem não usa, é algo a considerar?

Nunca gostei de usar pensinhos diários. Iac! Simplesmente, não assentam bem! E colam-se à pele! Ah e tal, tu é que não sabes usar!, podem estar vocês a pensar… Mas caramba, aquilo não é engenharia espacial!

Eu acho que não são nada ergonómicos. Ou os coloco direitinhos nas cuecas e falham o alvo redondamente, ou os coloco mais acima e já não ficam com as formas ajustadas, pelo que acabam por se colar à roupa ou pior ainda, à pele. Ai, coisa mais desconfortável!

Para não falar do impacto ambiental que constituem!

Verdade seja dita, que não os usava diariamente, apenas nos últimos dias da menstruação (e como usei implante durante três anos, já lá ia o tempo…), mas mesmo assim fazia-me confusão…

O que é certo é que com a gravidez, a partir de certa altura, passei a precisar de os usar diariamente. Ainda comprei uma caixa, mas depois pensei…

Então, eu estou a fazer stock de fraldinhas reutilizáveis para o meu bebé, entre outras razões, para evitar contribuir para 500 anos de decomposição do plástico das fraldas, e depois em mim vou usar pensinhos destes!? Hell, no!

Ora lá vai a Pi para as internetes à procura de um molde para fazer pensinhos em tecido. É verdade, há muitos disponíveis. O problema é… Têm o mesmo formato que os de compra. Raça! Só me resolver metade do problema!

I never liked to wear panty liners. Iac! They just don’t fit well! And they stick to the skin! Oh please you big whiner, you just don’t know how to use them!, you may be thinking... But damn, that’s not space engineering!

I think they’re not ergonomic at all. Either you put them aligned with the underwear and they fail the target miserably, or you place them higher up and they no longer adapt to your panties, ending up sticking to clothing or even worse, to the skin. Alas, most uncomfortable thing!

Not to mention the environmental impact they make!

Truth be told, I use them seldom - only in the last days of menstruation (and since I had a contraceptive implant for three years, it has been some time ...), but still it annoyed me...

What is certain is that with the pregnancy, from one point, I began to need to use them daily. I even bought a box, but then I thought...

So I'm doing a stock of reusable diapers for my baby, among other reasons, to avoid contributing to 500 years of plastic decomposition, and then I'm going to use plastic panty liners myself!? Hell, no!

Well there went Pi for the internet looking for a pattern to make cloth panty liners. True, there are many available. The problem is... They have the same format as the disposable ones. Geez! I only solve half the problem!

Pronto, tenho que desenhar eu um mais ergonómico. E voilá!

Okay, I have to draw a more ergonomic one myself. And voila!

Para mim, este formato resulta muito bem, não sai do sítio, protege o que tem que proteger e é muito confortável!

Como material utilizei polar/fleece (manta do IKEA) e flanela (de uns lençóis velhos). Como foi a primeira vez que fiz, optei por ir experimentando várias formas de conjugar e coser os dois materiais.

For me, this format works very well, it doesn’t slide, protects what it has to protect and is very comfortable!

For materials, I used fleece (from an IKEA blanket) and flannel (from old sheets). As it was the first time I did them, I experiment with various ways to combine and sew the two materials.

Aqui fica o passo a passo em fotos e já vos digo a forma que gostei mais…

Here is the step by step photos for each and later I’ll tell you the one I liked best...

Todos funcionam bem, mas o meu preferido é sem dúvida com apenas uma camada de flanela e as abas em polar, embora resulte também muito bem com as abas em flanela, apenas ligeiramente menos estável.

Para a estabilidade do pensinho, contribui também a costura central. Experimentei das duas formas e é como resulta melhor.

They all work well, but my favorite is undoubtedly with only a layer of flannel and tabs on fleece, although results also very well with the tabs in flannel, only slightly less stable.

For the stability of the sanitary napkin also contribute central seam. I tried both ways and it is clearly better.

E pronto, já foram usados e lavados muitas vezes e continuam a fazer o serviço direitinho. :)

Aqui fica mais uma dica de poupança, que por vezes pode ser esquecida – Tirar sempre a bateria do portátil!

Eu sei que já há muitos modelos em que a bateria está acoplada e não há nada a fazer… Para os outros, no entanto, a bateria só deve ser usada quando não há possibilidade de ligar o portátil à corrente.

E muito menos, ter o portátil ligado à corrente e a bateria colocada, visto que estamos a despender mais energia desnecessariamente.

Assim, a bateria deve ser colocada a carregar quando estamos a utilizar o portátil, e assim que carregada, tirada e arrumada.

Desta forma, sabemos que havendo a necessidade, temos a bateria pronta a usar (e já na mala, para não ficar esquecida!).

Para além de permitir uma poupança de eletricidade, expande também o tempo de vida da bateria!

Here's another saving tip, which can sometimes be forgotten - always remove your laptop battery!

I know there are already many models in which the battery is attached and there is nothing to do... For others, however, the battery should only be used when there is no possibility to plug your laptop.

Most of all, avoid having the laptop plugged in and the battery attached – You’ll be spending more energy unnecessarily.

Thus, the battery should be put to charge when we’re using the notebook, and as soon as it’s charged, taken out and packed up.

This way, we know that when there’s the need, we have the battery ready to use (and already in the laptop bag, as not to be left behind!).

In addition to saving in the electricity bill, you also extend the battery life time!

Dica de poupança: 5 formas de poupar ao lavar as mãos / Saving tip: 5 ways to save money when washing your hands

Ao longo do dia, inevitavelmente lavamos as mãos várias vezes (felizmente!). Mas é certo que isso acarreta um gasto de água e sabão. Assim, hoje deixo-vos cinco formas para poupar ao lavar as mãos!

        1)      Desligar a água enquanto se ensaboa.

Pode parecer que não, mas este pequeno gesto permite uma poupança de vários litros de água.

        2)      Aplicar diretamente o sabão.

Uma forma de poupar ao lavar as mãos é evitar molhá-las antes de por o sabão. Se usarem sabão líquido, não há necessidade de abrir a torneira antes. Basta esfregar o sabão e depois sim, passar por água.

        3)      Utilizar água fria.

A não ser que as mãos estejam realmente muito suja ou gordurosas, não vale a pena ativar o esquentador para lavar as mãos, poupando-se assim no gás.

        4)      Trocar o sabão líquido por sabonete.

Os sabonetes tornam-se mais económicos, não só pelo seu preço inicial, mas também porque duram mais tempo. Além de que ecologicamente, apresentam menos impacto.

        5)      Diluir sabão líquido.

Se ainda assim, prefere o sabão líquido, pode diluí-lo um pouco com água, prolongando a sua utilização. Mas económico ainda, é utilizar sabão líquido de corpo (dos mais baratos) diluído e ir enchendo um dispensador.

Throughout the day, inevitably we wash our hands several times (thankfully!). But that certainly entails an expenditure of water and soap. So today I leave you five ways to save money when washing your hands!

   1) Turn off the water while soaping.

It may not seem so, but this small gesture allows a savings of several litters of water.

   2) Apply the soap directly.

One way to save when washing hands is to avoid water them before putting the soap. If you use liquid soap, there’s no need to turn on the faucet before. Just rub the soap, then yes, rinse your hands.

   3) Use cold water.

Unless your hands are really dirty or greasy, it’s not worth to activate the water heater to wash your hands, thus saving up on gas.

   4) Replace liquid soap for solid soap.

Solid soaps become cheaper, not only for its selling price, but also because they last longer. Apart from that, they have less impact ecologically.

   5) Dilute liquid soap.

If you still prefer liquid soap, you can dilute it a bit with water, prolonging its use. For bigger savings, you can buy body wash (the cheapest), dilute it and fill a dispenser.
