Há cerca de dois anos, após muita insistência da minha
parte, o home concordou em arranjarmos um gatinho! Esse gatinho acabou por vir
do terreno adjacente à casa do meu pai.
Era esta coisa fofa! Uma mistura de siamês com uma gata
rafeira. Lindo, lindo de morrer!
About two
years, upon much insistence on my part, the hubby finally agreed to get a
kitten! The kitten himself was found in the land next to my father’s.
And was
(is) he cute! A mixture of Siamese and stray cat. Beautiful, beautiful as can be!
O home ainda tentou ser forte, mas rapidamente se apaixonou
pelo nosso Loki. E com razão, este gato é o máximo! É mesmo bonito, meigo
(embora não aprecie colo), brincalhão e faz muita companhia.
The hubby
tried to be strong, but quickly fell in love with our Loki. And with reason,
this cat is the best! It is beautiful, affable (even if he doesn’t enjoy being
held…), playful and makes a great company.
Nunca, num milhão de anos, pensei eu que conseguia convencer
o home a arranjar mais um gatinho. Porque este já dava trabalho e,
principalmente, despesa; porque não se iam dar bem; porque não, ponto final!
Never, in a
million years, did I think I could convince the hubby to get one more kitten.
Because this already gives a lot of work and, especially, expense, he said;
because they won’t get along, he said; because no, that’s it!
Mas não foi não, ponto final! Na escola onde trabalho vivem
imensos gatos nos telhados. Isto quer dizer, imensas ninhadas a aparecer
constantemente. Ora há uns meses, uma gatinha duma dessas ninhadas caiu para o
nosso jardim interior… E quem é que podia resistir?... Telefonei ao home que me
disse: “Tu é que sabes!”
“Eu é que sei? Esta agora, não estava à espera disto…” E
sabendo eu… Lá trouxe o saquinho de pulgas assustado para casa. O home primeiro
suspirou, depois encolheu os ombros, e depois sorriu! Estava feito! Fomos logo
com ela ao veterinário, porque tínhamos receio que pudesse ter alguma coisa que
fizesse mal ao gato sensível que já tínhamos em casa. Pulgas, muitas, muitas
pulgas!
But that
was not it! At the school where I work, there are an overload of cats on the
roofs. Which means they breed constantly. Now a few months ago, a kitten from
one these litters fell to our indoor garden ... And who could resist it? ... I
phoned the hubby who said: "It’s your call!"
"It’s
my call? What do I do now, I wasn't expecting that ...” And knowing myself ... Obviously,
I brought the scared bag of fleas home. The hubby sighed at first, then
shrugged his shoulders, and, finally, smiled! It was done. We immediately went
with her to the vet, as we were afraid that she could have something to do harm
the sensitive cat that we already had at home. Well she had fleas, many, many
fleas!
Com isso resolvido, só tínhamos um problemazito… Como é que
os gatos reagiriam um ao outro. Sabíamos que o nosso Loki é muito medricas, mas
os gatos quando estão assustados é quando são mais perigosos.
Ao início tiveram os dois bastante receio, principalmente o
Loki, e houve algumas bufadelas, mas no geral correu muito bem e, ao fim de uma
semana, já se davam super bem!
With that worked
out, we had only a simple, little problem... How the cats would react to each
other. We knew that our Loki is very fearful, but when cats are scared, that’s
when they’re most dangerous.
A first,
they were both quite scared, especially Loki, and there were some bufadelas, but
overall it went very well, and by the end of the week, they already were good
friends!
Aqui está como fizemos:
1º Definimos uma
divisão da casa para a gatinha ficar ao início. No nosso caso foi a
cozinha. Tapámos os espaços à volta das máquinas para que ela não fugisse lá
para trás e pusemos-lhe uma tacinha para a água, outra para comida, um caixote
areia e uma caminha para dormir.
Assim, o Loki não perdeu todo o seu território e a Sigyn
pode ter um espaço onde se sentiu segura.
We assigned a room of the house to the
kitten, at first. In our case, it was the kitchen. We covered the spaces
around the machines so she couldn’t get back there and gave her a small cup for
water, one for food, one small litter box and a comfortable place to sleep.
Thus, Loki didn´t
lose all of his territory and Sigyn had a space where she felt safe.
2º Apresentação calma
e faseada. A primeira vez que trouxemos a Sigyn para casa, sentei-me com
ela no chão do hall e deixei que fosse o Loki a se aproximar. Não os coloquei
um à frente do outro, nem a pus debaixo do focinho dele. Isso só criaria
agitação por parte de ambos. O Loki foi-se assim apercebendo da diferença de
odores antes de ver a gata.
Depois dessa primeira vez, ao longo da semana fomos
proporcionando momentos cada vez maiores para que se vissem e cheirassem, mas
de forma controlada.
Aqui tivemos uma grande vantagem. A nossa cozinha dá para
uma marquise que também tem entrada pela sala. Assim, podiam-se observar
mutuamente através da porta de vidro da cozinha.
Calm and phased introductions. The first time we brought Sigyn
home, I sat with her on the floor and it was Loki who approached. Do not put
one ahead of the other, nor the kitten under the older cat’s snout. This only
creates anxiety on both. In this way, Loki was realising the difference of smells
before he could see the cat.
After this
first time, over the course of the week we provided them moments gradually
longer in which they could see and smell each other, but in a controlled way.
Here we had
a great advantage. Our kitchen leads to a marquise that also have an entry through
the living room. Thus, it was possible for the cats to observe each other
through the glass door.
3º Associámos coisas
boas à nova gata. Por exemplo, fomos dando comida aos dois ao mesmo tempo,
cada um de um lado da porta de vidro da cozinha. O Loki via a Sigyn e recebia
comida. Também esfregámos o boneco preferido do Loki na Sigyn antes de
brincarmos com ele.
Associate good things to the new cat. For example, we gave food to the
two at the same time, each one on one side of the glass door in the kitchen. Therefore,
making the connection for Loki between seeing/smelling Sigyn and receiving
food. Also, we rubbed Loki’s favourite stuffed animal in Sigyn’s fur before playing
with him.
4º Muito mimo ao
Loki. Tal como com um irmão mais velho, não se pode descurar o gato que já
ca estava.
A lot of cuddling the older cat. As with an older brother, we cannot
neglect the cat that was already in the family.
E pronto, em pouco tempo, começaram a brincar, a dar-se
mutuamente lambidelas e a dormirem enroscados um no outro!
In this way,
in a short time, they began to play, give each other licks and sleep cuddling each
other!
