Cinco mudanças desde que me tornei mãe… | Five changes since I become a mother...

- Perdi o nome.

- Agora sou fina. Falo de mim própria na 3ª pessoa. A mãe faz! A mãe dá!

- I lost my name. I don’t know where it went. I’ve started loosing it during pregnancy. I’m no longer Pi, Pipas or Pipinhas... I am a mother or mommy. In the mouths of others and mine. I'm pleased with the trade.

- Now I'm posh. I speak of myself in the 3rd person. Mommy handles it! Mommy makes it! Daddy, keep an eye on the baby, mommy’s gonna take a shower! (There again is mommy, not that Pi who used to live in this house).

- I'm getting ambidextrous. It's an interesting capacity. I've been training and soon I guess I’ll even be able to filigree with my left hand! (It would be surprising, as I don’t even know how to do it with my right hand, but you never know...).

- I’m no longer a picky eater. The family won’t believe it when they see me eat lunch in five minutes without stopping halfway to settle the stomach. And without quirks. Mother, I no longer have to take all the thingies out of the mandarins or butter the bread with pinpoint accuracy!

- I call the hubby to talk about poo. Usually not in exclusive, but it has happened to call him just to say: “Afonso pooed!”. Beautiful. And the hubby seems pleased with these calls. Even more beautiful.

Can someone relate?

Emancipei-me! | I freed myself!

Sozinha, sem ninguém me dar a mão.

Yesterday went out of the house alone! Ok, so what?... You’re thinking.

So what!? I haven’t been out alone for ages! Ok, months!! I believe that since I came home on pregnancy leave!

First, the man was unemployed, so we went everywhere together. (Note that I’m not complaining, I was pretty good!)

Then, pregnancy was quite hard on my body, and I couldn’t stand much.

When the hubby started working, as we only have one car, I was dependent on my father in law and my mother to go to doctor appointments and such (and still am). Of course I'm grateful, but it's not easy to feel so dependent.

Finally, in the last month of pregnancy I had elephant legs. Really. I could barely walk. So I didn’t left the house except for doctor appointments and anything I needed, I could count on my hubby or my mother or my in-laws...

Of course, after my Afonso was born and to not be taking him out of the house so soon, I’ve also been here...

But yesterday! Ah, yesterday! My in-laws came for a visit and I asked them to stay a little while with Afonso.

And I went out to buy a lottery ticket (still not rich) and bread!

Oh yeah, baby! I went up an entire street! Alone, with no one to give me a hand. I’m a grown up, am I not?!

But I must say, it was a strange feeling! I felt, well, not wanting to hurt any feelings, like those people who are afraid of the outside and won’t leave the house, and then finally have a breakthrough and put one foot on the street, you know?

So it was a mixed feeling. I felt victorious, but also insecure, exposed...

I have to get out more often, or I’ll turn into an hermit!

Chegou o meu Afonso!! | My Afonso is here!

October 28, 2015! The induction was scheduled for today, but my baby boy had other plans!

It was normal birth and went quite well.

We’ve been getting to know each other and discovering one thousand new things every time.

Now, excuse me, but I'm going to drool over my baby (which is open eyed, staring at me, and this does not last forever!). :)

- São obviamente mais ecológicas;

- São mais económicas;

- São práticas quer para limpar chichis e cocós, quer para limpar a carinha do bebé (o que não se deve fazer com as toalhitas descartáveis!);

- Não representam propriamente trabalho adicional (quem já vai lavar fraldas, lava também as toalhitas…);

In addition to the cloth diapers, here at home we’re also going to use reusable wipes.

For several reasons:

- They are obviously more ecological;
- They are more economic;
- They’re practical either to clean baby bums or to wipe his face (something you shouldn’t do with disposable wipes!);
- They don’t really represent additional work (if you’re already going to wash diapers, you’ll wash baby wipes...);
- They are suitable for the sensitive baby skin (they don’t have any chemicals, nor alcohol).

There are several places where they can get them and they come in different materials (microfiber, cotton, terrycloth, bamboo, flannel...).

I chose to do mine from some old flannel sheets, making them even more ecological and economical.

I made two different sizes.

A 14 cm wide, which fit perfectly in this plastic box and thus become practical to transport.

E umas maiores, com 20 cm.

And a larger, 20 cm wide.

I chose to do them with only one layer, it seems to me enough. To avoid shredding, I zigzag it all around.

For now, I think I did about 50 wipes.

After using them for a while, I’ll give feedback regarding if there’s need for more wipes and if it makes sense to do them with two layers or not.

I also used the same sheets to make two sets of smaller sheets for the crib.

Ecological moms, how do you like reusable wipes? The one’s that doesn’t use them, would you consider?

As you know, here at home we’re going to use reusable diapers. We’ll use different systems – you can see my stock here. One of them will be the diaper (pre-folded or adjusted) and a cover.

In addition to the PUL covers, I decided to also do some fleece ones.

I used a template that was provided in a portuguese diaper sewing group in facebook. You can also find it here (I believe it is the original site).

It’s simple and the result is a treat.

Querem ver como se faz? Nada mais simples, sigam-me os bons! :)

Do you want to make some too? Nothing simpler, follow me!

            1.  Imprimir e cortar o molde;
            1. Print and cut the pattern;

            2.  Cortar as peças nas cores desejadas;
            2. Cut the pieces in the desired color;

            3.  Coser o reforço com ponto ziguezague (podem optar por fazê-lo no lado de dentro ou por fora, é uma questão de gosto);
            3. Sew the extra wet with a zigzag stitch (you can choose to do it on the inside or out, it is a matter of taste):

            4. Unir e coser a capa (aqui tenham em atenção o lado em que querem que fique o reforço);
            4. Attach and sew the cover (here, take notice of the side you want the extra wet zone to stay);

            5. Unir os lados mais pequenos da cintura e pernas e coser;
            5. Connect the smaller sides of the waistband and leg cufs and sew;

            6.  Dobrar ao meio;
            6. Fold in half;

            7. Colocá-los por dentro da capa do avesso e coser (eu utilizo só dois alfinetes para segurar uma coisa à outra, em cantos opostos);
            7. Put them inside the inside out cover and sew (I use only two pins to hold one thing to another, on opposite corners);

            8. Virar a capa do direito e está pronta!
            8. Turn the cover and it’s ready!

Beautiful, aren’t they?

The leg cufs can be a little trickier to sew straight, especially in newborn size. But with patience and stitching slowly, they’ll look great!

While Afonso doesn’t use them yet, I leave you the Panda as a model! ;)

Qualquer dúvida, perguntem, que o que puder, ajudo! :)

If you have any questions, ask. I’ll do what I can to help! :)

Já nascias, não? | Can’t you just be born yet?

- Já arrumaste e limpaste a casa toda 500 vezes;

- Já tens o congelador e a despensa cheios de comida;

- Já preparas-te o quartinho, fizeste a caminha, arrumas-te as roupinhas…;

- Já tens as malas prontas;

- Estás parva, tens pés de elefante, mal consegues andar (quanto mais calçar! – tenho a informar que os únicos sapatos que me servem são do meu padrasto, nunca me senti mais linda!);

- Ganha juízo, nem te consegues sentar à máquina de costura com as dores de costas!;

- Estás quase, quase a poder comer um bolo!;

- Já chega de olhar para roupa e fraldas, agora queres usá-las no teu boneco!;

- You’ve organized and cleaned the whole house 500 times;

- You’ve got the freezer and pantry full of food;

- You’ve prepare yourself the nursery, made the bed in the crib, you’ve fold and storage the baby clothes...;

- You’ve got the maternity bags all packed and ready;

- You’ve got the procedure for the D day all talked about with you husband and family...

Now we need to ask: Can’t you just be born yet!?

But then...

Maybe there’s still time to:

- Make a few more baby wipes...

- Sew a doudou...

- Have I cleaned behind every piece of furniture?

- Enjoy the belly (I don’t know when I’ll have another one of these!)...

- Burn your last rounds with your husband, while still a carefree childless couple...

- Pamper the cats...

- I haven’t finished the childbirth classes (I want the breastfeeding one!)...

But then…

- How silly are you, you have elephant feet and can hardly walk! (let alone put on shoes - I must inform you that the only shoes that fit me are my stepfather’s - I never felt more beautiful!);

- Get a hold of yourself, you can’t sit at the sewing machine with the back pain!;
- You're almost, almost able to eat a cake!;

- That's been enough time to look at baby clothes and diapers, now what you want is to use them on your baby!;

- Before long, you won’t have to get up all night to pee! Instead, you’ll d
o it to breastfeed! Upgrade!

- You're almost, but almost, almost able to have your prince in your arms, to see him, to caress him... Come on!

That is why…

Can’t you just be born, yet!?
