Adeus, avó! | Goodbye, granny!

E a saudade dói.

Assim, ficam as memórias.

Arrependi-me assim que as palavras me saíram da boca.

This week we gave our last goodbye to our granny Cila.

She wasn’t our grandmother by blood, but from the heart, which doesn’t take away anything.

Like all losses, it leaves a great void, a great longing.

And the nostalgia hurts. It's a feeling with both sides. For one, reminds us of good memories, on the other, we know these are moments that have passed and that won’t be repeated.

But it’s a good thing that we miss the departed. It is a sign that we loved them, we lived good times with them, we were happy together!

So, the memories are what remains.

And I can remind me of how you braided our hair. I was always the better combed girl in ballet!

How you made me popcorn and orange juice as a snack while watching Dragon Ball after school.

The stories of your childhood that you told us. You were such a naughty girl!

The patience you had to feed us. You'd make drawings, play with pinipons, tell stories...

How you cooked our favorite meals: turkey steaks with cream and mushrooms for me and lemon sauce for sis.

How you’d pick us at school and always genuinely wanting to know about our day.

How you dealt with our fights: "When the blood reaches the kitchen, I’ll call the ambulance" And the fight was over, because we found you funny (sometimes...).

How you liked dolls as much or more than we did!

The matching dresses you made for us.

All that you taught us, played and loved!

Thank you, granny Cila! For this and much more!

I will never forget one time I put you down. I was 6/7 years old and when leaving school a classmate asked me who you were. I hesitated and said you were our housekeeper. I regretted as soon as the words left my mouth. You didn’t say anything, but I realized I‘d hurt you. You were always our grandmother in infants, children and adults.

And I'm grateful that you've also known your newest great-grandchild. And that you held Afonso in your arms, as you did with us!
